Without American involvement the â€Å"Hun† will continue to attack American ships on the open seas and will destroy the great countries of Europe. And America has already thrown its economic forces in with the French and the British and America can’t afford not to support them. But America must carefully weigh the consequences of war. America must decide as a nation that the loss of life and money it will surely sustain are worth it. While the loss of America soldiers is something that will definitely happen if America enters the war that is raging in Europe, the Germans have made it clear that this is not a war the Americans can afford not to get involved in. There are many good reasons for America to join WWI. The American people can’t just allow the German practice of unrestricted submarine warfare. The German Government pledged to stop attacking all passenger ships and to allow the crews of merchant vessels to escape before their ships were attacked but now the Germans are resuming unrestricted submarine warfare. I believe that eating healthy can teach a person discipline in life. This and exercising have been my new lifestyle for now a year because I have seen benefits of living a healthy life. I live by this motto every day. Learning how to live clean or healthy is not easy at all; first people have to do research about what foods can, and cannot be eaten. Then, it’s learning what vitamins, nutrients and properties the body needs to make the metabolism go fast. I started to eat healthy because it can add to any person 10 years of life. During the process of assimilating to my new style, I learned a lot of things that now are very helpful to me. Even though the only point of eating healthy was to reduce my body fat percentage, I also learned how to manage my time, the difference between quantity and quality, and also how to resist temptations, like saying â€Å"NO† to junk food. The first week was hard; I had to eat 6 meals per day at certain times that I was not used to eat at, including the rules of eating like eating breakfast within an hour of waking up which is the most important meal of the day. This competition strategy increases the buyers bargaining power as they can choose which company to travel with either based on the quality or price. Bargaining Power of Suppliers Ideally, the main factors affecting suppliers bargaining power comprise of suppliers concentration, the threat of backward and forward integration, substitute suppliers and switching costs(Rahman, Azad, Mostari, 2015). Bearing in mind that airline industry calls for huge investment the suppliers in this industry are very few. For example, the major suppliers of the Qantas aircraft are Airbus and Boeing. Suppliers being few in the market prevents Qantas and other players in the industry from exercising their control over them. Therefore, the suppliers have the higher bargaining power that the Qantas Airline. According to Wheelen Hunger (2010) low supplier concentration has long-term negative effects on firms. This is because it reduces the firms value. Qantas is negatively suffering from the low supplier concentration consequences. Threat of the Substitutes From the case studies, it is evident that Qantas is faced with stiff competition exhibited by the other players in the industry. This means that there are other alternatives for traveling. Threat of the substitutes appears to be more intense in the domestic and the regional market than in the international market. This is because there are limited alternatives for international traveling. Domestically, the threat of substitutes is posed by other modes of transport such as road, rail, and sea. In the international arena, the substitute threat is posed by other international competitors such as British Airways. The lower performance product portrayed by other players in the industry makes it difficult for the customers to switch from Qantas service to other services offered by the competitors. Alternatively, other services providers in this industry offer low-quality products making it hard for the buyers to switch from the Qantas' products(Sumers, 2013). The adoption of the substantial product differentiation has worked best for the Qantas. The company has differentiated its products by designing different services from other players in the industry. Finally, there are a limited number of substitutes in the airline industry. The availability of few substitutes in this industry has had positive impacts for Qantas. Threat of New Entrants The success of any industry will attract more entrepreneurs who will want to take advantage of the existing opportunities. This is encouraged by the number of factors such as low investment cost, favorable government regulations and others(Porter, 2008). Currently, it is very difficult for the new competitors to enter the airline industry. This is attributable the high cost of investment that makes it difficult for the new investors to enter the industry(Sandilands, 2012). This was a significant improvement from the 2012 net loss of $245 million(Qantas Airways Ltd, 2017). This was the fastest growth in the company performance in the past eight years. The improvement in the financial performance was strengthened by the actions that were adopted by the company during the year including the prudent approach to capital expenditure and reducing debt(Qantas Group, 2013). Additionally, the growth in the financial performance was also attributable to the growth of domestic business operations. Financial Position (Assets, Liabilities and Owners Equity) At the end of 2013, the Qantas total assets amounted to $20, 032 million. The total assets growth was at -5.41 percent. On the other total liabilities were $14, 192 million and owners equity was $5, 840 total to $20, 032. This was a slight decline from its financial position in 2012 that was ranging at 21, 178(Qantas Airways Ltd., 2017). In 2013, the company liabilities superseded the owners equity. This means the company was relying more on debts and loans to finance its operations. Qantas Financial Performance and Financial Position in 2016 Financial Performance In 2016, Qantas Group realized a net income of $1.03 billion(Chung, 2016). This was a tremendous increase in the company financial performance over a decade. This revenue was matched with an expense of $15.71 billion. Financial Position In 2016, the Qantas Group total assets were $16, 705 million with a total growth of -4.71 percent, asset turnover 0.95 and return on average assets of 6.01 percent. This was notable growth on the company asset performance over the years. On the other side, the company liabilities amounted to $13, 445 million and owners equity totaled $3, 360(Qantas Airways Ltd., 2017). Similarities and Differences between 2013 and 2016 Financial Years Similarities In both years, the company has realized a revenue as well as improvement in the financial year compared to the respective years. Supremacy Idea By West And Torgovnick Both Cornel West and Marianna De Marco Torgovnick discuss the idea of supremacy, Manichean theologies, and authoritarian behavior in their essays. However, they deal with these ideas differently and for different reasons. In West s essay, Malcolm X and Black Rage , he explains Mal colm X s views on how to transfer black rage in such a way that it would reject supremacy. In Torgovnick s essay, On Being White, Female, and Born in Bensonhurst , she writes how her hometown held supremacist ideas and how this af fected her. West is still pursuing the goal of black free dom by looking into the past, especially Malcolm X s writ ings. Whereas, Torgovnick kind of runs away from things and refers to living in Bensonhurst as having simultaneously choking and nutritive power. This difference is mainly due because West wants to try to make things better, while Torgovnick leaves her hometown feeling that she needs to start things over. Torgovnick writes about supremacist ideas in her cul tural background. For example, she says, Italian Americans in Bensonhurst are notable for their cohesiveness and pro vinciality; the slightest pressure turns those qualities into prejudice and racism (Torgovnick 123). In other words there is a lot of racism and prejudice, especially towards Hawash 2 blacks, in Bensonhurst. Torgovnick s father also held supremacist ideas. Her father reacted with indifference to the death of a black man in Bensonhurst. As Torgovnick writes, Oh, no, my father says when he hears the news about the shooting...He has no trouble acknowledging the wrongness of the death...The explanation is right before him but, Yeah, he says, still shaking his head, yeah, but what were they doing there (Torgovnick 125). Even though, he recognizes the wrongness of the death, he says the blacks weren t supposed to be there. His reason for his death holds supremacist ideas, because here he is being a racist. To say that blacks don t belong in a cer tain neighborhood, is just like saying that they aren t good enough. Thus, Torgovnick father is being a racist. Torgovnick s hometown also holds Manichean ideologies, which means to see things only as black and white, right and wrong. In other words people who hold Manichean ideologies usually don t see things in between. She writes, Bensonhurst is a neighborhood dedicated to believing that its values are the only values; it tends to towards certain forms of inertia (Torgovnick 124). Thus, the people of Bensonhurst believe that any other values are wrong, and their values are right. Here you can see how Torgovnick s hometown held Manichean ideologies because the people feel Hawash 3 that there values are the only right values. Any other values would be viewed as unacceptable to the people of Bensonhurst. Authoritarian behavior also exists in Bensonhurst. For example, when she was entering high school, her parents and counselor recommended a secretarial track despite her high scores. Torgovnick writes, Although my scores are superb, the guidance counselor has recommend the secretarial track...My mother s preference is clear: the secretarial track...My father also prefers the secretarial track (Torgovnick 128). This is authoritarian behavior because rather that asking Torgovnick which track she wanted to follow, they wanted to choose it for her. Just because she is a girl, they wanted to put her in a track that is below her standards. Cornel West uses Malcolm X s writings to explain su premacy, Manichean ideologies, and authoritarian behavior. West agrees with most of Malcolm X s ideas, however he disagrees with Malcolm X s rejection of black church and music. West argues by using the metaphor of jazz that, an improvisational mode of protean, fluid, and flexible dispo sitions toward reality suspicious of either/or viewpoints, dogmatic pronouncements, or supremacist ideologies (West 119). In other words, to West the black church and black music represents freedom, something that Malcolm X does not realize.
